11 month pic

well we only have one laundry basket picture left to take of our little man. sad day in my book.
we took his first picture in the basket when he was just a week old, he was so tiny and still back then!
now he's a mover and a shaker and we can hardly get him to look at the camera!
he doesn't have time for our nonsense.
"mom, get me out of this basket. i look ridiculous."

the end of november.

as you can see our days have been full. thanksgiving brought full bellies and ry's first birthday photo shoot was full of fun. you should have seen him lay his little face ever so gently on his cake like it was a pillow. it was seriously the sweetest thing on earth. i can't believe my baby boy will be turning one in just 23 short days. sigh. where has the time gone?

11 months baby (11/22/12).

the days just keep closing in on us don't they baby boy? it's unreal how quickly the past 11 months  have gone. i was packing up some of your newborn clothes a few days ago and it was so hard to imagine you wearing them and to remember you being that small. in passing, i also noticed your tiny handprint that we put on a baseball when you were just 3 weeks old. time flies.

you are crawling in super speed these days and i can hardly keep up. all the crawling is rubbing your little legs and the tops of your feet raw, but no need to worry-i'm sure walking is right around the corner! you took your first steps on November 19th between daddy and i! we were so surprised and proud! and of course, i cried.

you still love splashing in the dogs' water bowls and messing with the tv. another fun thing you've picked up is opening the cabinet doors in the kitchen. you are also starting to throw some nice temper tantrums. it's getting really interesting over here i tell ya.

your favorite thing right now is throwing balls and chasing after them. you're still clapping and throwing your hands up for "TOUCHDOWN!!", but haven't quite perfected the wave. you have your own 'wave' though and it's adorable, even if it is a little backwards.

i've been a little more on the emotional side lately with your 1st birthday coming up. i heard the song i sing to you every night (taylor swift's never grow up) on the radio and i couldn't stop the tears. i remember when you were my tiny swaddled up newborn and i would sing it with all the hope in the world that it would somehow come true. i guess it's inevitable. you can't blame me for trying though and believe me i will never give up.

p.s. please stay this little.

love always,

baby scheduling.

as you may know, i'm a big planner, scheduler, blah blah blah. so i wanted to share some things that we've found to work for us in getting baby boy scheduled. also, i am one of those who "swear by" the book, On Becoming Baby Wise.

1. first i think it's important to know how you want to schedule your baby's feedings. you may want to research on demand and scheduled feeding styles. when rylan was born and up to a couple of weeks old i did on demand feeding-basically feeding him whenever he cried or seemed hungry, which was about every 2 hours or so. when he was about 1 to 2 months old it became more scheduled. i would keep track of his feedings in my phone (on an app! how clever these people are today.) and would feed him every 3 hours regardless of hunger signs. then we would play. then he would sleep. in theory, if you keep eating and sleeping separate then baby will not associate the two together, hence no nighttime feedings!

2. routine, routine, routine! this is one of the best things you can do, in my opinion, to get your baby on a schedule and to help you learn what they want/need. once rylan was scheduled i new exactly when he would need a nap and when he would be hungry. this will also help you to not confuse the two, because we all know it's hard, especially at first, to figure out why your baby is crying! i would suggest this for bedtime as well. make sure you do the same thing for bedtime every night. our nightly routine goes a little something like this: i nurse rylan at around 8 or 8:30 then we let him play for about 15 minutes or so while we pick up things around the house. then we change his diaper, put on his pjs and brush his teeth. after he's all ready for bed, we sing his bedtime songs, kiss him goodnight, turn on his sound machine and he's out.

3. limit bad habits. we don't own a rocking chair, crazy i know, but your baby doesn't and shouldn't have to be rocked or swung to sleep. i'm not saying i never did these things or that you shouldn't ever, but i just want to encourage you to keep them more of the exception than the norm. the more we do things, the more our babies expect them. another habit that can form if not curved pretty early on is nighttime feedings. our doctor told us that once he could sleep through the night (he was probably about 6 weeks old) he didn't need to be fed. now i will say i probably drew a harder line on this one than most because i was so determined to not have to wake up for nightly feedings as quickly as possible, but i do believe it worked for us. there's always a balance that's needed here. once ry could make it to 4:30 am without being fed i knew he didn't need to be fed before that anymore. and once he was sleeping til 5:30 am i knew he didn't need to be fed before that anymore and so on. another important thing to note here is that sometimes babies wake up and just need to be comforted back to sleep so this is where you can choose your method of comfort. we chose (because we knew he didn't need to be fed in the night anymore) to give him his pacifier and pat him back to sleep. that's all. sweet and simple. now if ry ever wakes up in the night he doesn't expect to be fed, but he knows exactly what's coming-a pacifier and a good ol' pat on the back :).

4. i have heard that all babies are different so take these tips with a grain of grace :). i'm not suggesting here that our way is the only or even the best way. i just wanted to share what we've read and found to work for us.

rylan has been sleeping through the night, until around 5:30 am-at least, since he was around 6-8 weeks old. now that ry is almost 11 months, he nurses every 4 hours and eats 3 solid meals a day. he goes to bed at 9 (i know, i know, he's my little night owl) and doesn't wake up until 7:30 am.

please note that all of these techniques worked for us. we only have experience with one baby. our baby has no health, growth, or feeding concerns. also, i suggest talking to your doctor or researching further for yourself and your baby.

p.s. rylan took his first steps last night. and i cried.

like old times.

you ever have one of those days that just feels like the old days? you know the ones where you decide at 8 pm to load up the pups, hop in your little car and go for some starbucks? the ones where you just go for a drive with the windows down, sun streaming in on your face, and the radio up. the ones where you have nothing to do so you most always end up cuddling on the couch to a movie. sometimes, every once in a while, we catch a small glimpse of our life before we were mommy and daddy. sometimes, most of the time, we can't even remember what life was like before you. and most of the time that's perfectly fine by us. but give us a day with crisp fall air like the brink of winter, rosy cheeks and a side of extra cheesy flirting and we're back in that college town and our hearts feel full again :)

Ry's Tee Pee

so...making rylan's tee pee turned out to be a little more tricky than i imagined it in my head, but isn't that what always happens? well, that's how it is in my world at least. who's with me for more fail proof DIYs?? anyway, i was asked to do a tutorial so i'll try my best (sorry but we didn't take pictures along the way)!

we bought five 6 ft bamboo poles from hobby lobby along with a bag of leather ties and a 6 ft x 9 ft canvas drop cloth from lowe's, but i would recommend a bigger drop cloth or piece of fabric for this project.

we tied the poles together using the leather stripping, although, it would have been much easier to start off using a rubber band. we tied them loosely so that we were able to position the poles where we wanted them. after they were in position we tied them tighter. then we started messing with the drop cloth and realized we had bought the wrong size. doh. after a few minutes of frustration and brainstorming, we decided to make due with what we had and ended up just wrapping it around the poles. next, we made holes in the drop cloth so that we could tie it to two of the poles and then we just tied it in the front! if you buy the correct size you can do something more along the lines of this or this. but we like the way ours turned out and so does the new little inhabitant! and for now he's taking up a quarter of our living room!

insta-busy lately

well some of ry's birthday projects are coming right along. we started and finished his tee-pee this weekend, which was no easy task by the way, don't let them fool you and have been working on a banner as well. it's tough trying to be all crafty when you've got a little one splashing in dog bowls and tearing leaves off your plants.
i need eyes in the back of my head y'all.
hope you guys are having a great week! i'm finally getting a haircut...waaaaay overdue. oh and my favorite: getting my teeth cleaned :). i'm declaring this week mommy week.

November 7, 2012

and then comes...

...the madness. hey guys. i promise i haven't dropped off the face of the earth. we are just really busy over here. with our 5 year anniversary, rylan's 1st birthday and christmas all falling within a week and 3 days of each other i'm trying to get things in order ahead of time so i'm not stressing out the week of. things may slow down a bit here, but i promise i'll keep you updated as much as possible. :)

oh and i went with the majority and ended up at old navy for my skinny jean hunt and i found some great ones! thanks for your input!

November 5, 2012

i'm on the hunt.

...for the perfect pair of skinny jeans. i'm not one for liking super low waist lines as i'd rather not have to worry about keeping my backside covered. i feel a tad bit ridiculous running around trying to hold my shirt down in the back while wrangling up a small child and cleaning all the crushed up cheerios from the carpet. i literally need to grow an extra arm...go ahead and make that two extra arms. anywho, i want to know where you guys got your "go to" jeans! thanks for the help!

little red riding hood & the big bad wolf.

well i'd say rylan's first halloween was a success! we were leaning towards making him a fox, but ended up going with this idea instead! ry's costume is from Womp-A-Wear

we had so much fun dressing him up as the big bad wolf! he, on the other hand, was not too impressed by the hat and it ended up being ripped off his head the first half of the night with quite commanding force. the child is opinionated and he must be heard!

we spent the night at our church's trunk or treat surrounded by games, peter pan, and oompa loompa. can't wait to watch him running around one day with all the other kids.
or maybe i can.

although baby boy will never remember this night it is one we will hold on to forever.

i love you big bad wolf.

kisses always,
your little red riding hood
