New Mommy: Lessons Learned

Always, I repeat, always at all times have a burp rag or two with baby.

Clean now means there is only a little spit up on it.

Do not fill the bathtub up completely. You will just end up draining it because he will pee.

Wait at least 15 minutes after he eats to change his diaper or you will end up with a poopy mess, ruining at least a diaper or two.

Do not hold your iphone over your baby's still fusing head...ouch...sorry bubba.

Burn the fingernail clippers.

Do not get the bright idea to put your vibrating electric toothbrush on your baby's foot. He will kick it down your throat.

Keep your hair back. He will rip it out, leaving you balding. ;)

Watch out for those sharp fingernails that you are no longer clipping due to the infamous fingernail clipping incident. Be especially aware while he's eating. He will claw your chest like a ravenous tiger.

Make sure his diaper is on nice and snug or he will wiggle his way right out of it, thus resulting in a pee puddle.

He is still working on his neck strength so watch out for his special move: the headbutt. Also, make sure he does not sling his head into the mirror while looking at himself. He's dangerous I tell ya.

If you take him out in his carseat and end up unbuckling him at some point, make sure to buckle him back up when you put him in the car. Don't worry folks, we didn't make it very far and I hopped in the backseat and buckled him back up.

Do NOT forget the paci!

Also, keep an eye on daddy...he's still learning too :)

Mommies: take one of my buttons on the left and link up so we can learn from each other! Post a comment with your link for mommy wisdom!
Hope you are having a great week!

High Five Friday: 3/23/12

Hello Friday!
We meet again.
And I'm sure happy about this!
Why you ask?
Because I like Friday. a lot.

Wanna know what else I like??!

1. Finally getting to go outside of my neighborhood. I know, I know, it's crazy that I haven't gone anywhere since Monday, but our small group that meets on Tuesday nights was cancelled and it rained pretty much all week. You try taking a 3 month old out in the rain! It's no fun trust me.

2. Getting to watch THE HUNGER GAMES!!! but I have to wait until tomorrow. sad face.

3. Hanging out with Mr. Baker all weekend long. happy face.

4. My baby boy imitating the gurgling/bubbly noise that we taught him. It's so darn cute.

5. Getting dressed up! or not. whatever.

Hope you have a great weekend friends!

a day in the life of mom

4:53 a.m. my little arm clock, aka baby Ry, sounds that it's time to eat. I groggily sit up in bed and prop myself up on the pillows while Mr. Baker brings the little man to me where I'll spend the next 20 minutes or so trying to keep my eyes open while Ry eats to his heart's content. I then change baby boy's diaper and am back in bed by 5:30 a.m.

8:51 a.m. my tiny human alarm clock sounds again, "Rise and shine-you look beautiful momma! I'm hungry!". Although his cries aren't this charming or cute, however, I will give it to you bubba your cries are definitely a lot sweeter and more tolerable than most.

9:15 a.m. it's time to change a diaper!

9:20 a.m. I hurriedly scramble to make myself look halfway presentable (i.e. change my clothes, throw my hair in a messy ponytail and brush my teeth) before having to shoo the pups to the living room to let them outside to potty. By 9:30 a.m. baby, pups, and all necessary items for daily survival-paci, boppy, chapstick, etc. are moved to the living room.

9:40 a.m. I'm reading my Bible and praying for just a few quiet moments in the Word.

9:55 a.m. Ry and I do some talking and playing.

10:05 a.m. baby boy has passed out so I do a little reading.

10:50 a.m. Ry is stirring himself awake so I lay with him for a bit. He goes back to sleep as I hold him and check the internet on my phone.

11:35 a.m. he's fussy!

11:45 a.m. feed Ry.

12:05 p.m. done feeding Ry, but have to let him marinade for a bit before changing his diaper. If you're a mom you understand!

12:30 p.m. change Ry's diaper.

12:45-1:00 p.m. I get to eat lunch! I also start getting something ready for dinner.

1:05 p.m. change Ry's diaper. again. Now it's bath time!

1:20 p.m. I'm bundling my clean little guy and rocking him back to sleep. Then I do a little more reading while I hold him.

2:30 p.m. I do a light cleaning around the house.

3:05 p.m. relax for a moment.

3:15 p.m. baby boy's hungry!

3:40 p.m. change that smelly diaper and hang out til' daddy gets home! Sometimes I like to leave the last diaper just for daddy-he really appreciates it! ;)

4:20 p.m. daddy's home! I get to shower-yay! We spend the rest of the night doing dinner, hanging out and giving the rest of the poopy diapers to daddy! ;)

And repeat :)

11 things...

Ok, so I've been tagged in the bloggy 11 things game.
I think some of the rules were lost or broken along the wayside, so
I may diverge a little, but you'll love me anyways right?!

1. Post these rules
2. Post a photo of yourself and 11 random things
3. Answer the questions set for you in the original post
4. Create 11 new questions and tag people to answer them
5. Go to their blog/twitter and tell them that you tagged them

11 random things about me, myself and I:

-I grew up on a farm. Sometimes in the winter when our cows had calves my dad would let me bring them inside and I would read them bedtime stories.

-I have a phobia of groupings of things; bugs, birds, bees, etc.

-I took Karate when I was younger and made it to a brown belt, but I don't remember any of it.

-Everything in my house has its place and Mr. Baker has learned them nicely.

-I think being a mom is the best thing ever.

-I love chicken. It's my favorite.

-I'm obsessed with scarves and shoes.

-I've always wanted to live in the jungle like Swiss Family Robinson.

-I'm a terrible driver. I have been pulled over for almost anything you can think of.

-I'm a hypochondriac. Have you seen the movie 'The Switch'? The little boy in that movie could totally be my son.

-I'm late. No matter how much time I give myself I always find a way to be late.

No new questions were posted so I answered the original ones asked to Rouge & Whimsy.

1. If you could have any super power what would it be and why? Teleportation. So I can travel anywhere without having to fly, duh.

2. If you HAD to quit your job (or change your college major) and you HAD to pick a different career path what would you do? Well, I will NEVER quit my job as momma, but if I had to choose a different career path/college major...maybe...journalism...nursing...or veterinarian...

3. What was your most embarrassing moment? Not sure if I should disclose all the info on this one, but it has to do with underwear and a sporting event. very. very. embarrassing.

4. It's 2012, when you were younger how did you think the world would be by now? I don't know about you guys, but I was hoping for robot maids.

5. What is a fear you are trying to work on? I have a fear of death. Even though I have a relationship with my heavenly Father, I fear the unknown. I'm trying to transfer this fear to faith.

6. Do you remember POGS and if so how the HECK did you play? Of course I remember pogs although, I do not remember how to play. I think I used them more for decoration-I remember sticking a Felix the cat pog on my stereo with putty. Real cool, I know.

7. What talent do you wish you had but lack skills in? I need to improve my math skills I'm tired of counting on my fingers and photography.

8. What store could you max out your credit card in? Oh man. There's a lot. H&M. Target. Pottery Barn. Gap. Urban Outfitters. Forever 21. and so on and so on.

9. What was your favorite childhood toy or activity? I played outside all the time. I was a tomboy. None of that Barbie and house stuff. I loved swimming and sports.

10. If you could have a second house anywhere in the world where would it be and why? Santorini, Greece. Look it up and you'll know.

Here are some new questions:

If you could have dinner with any famous person past or present who would it be and why?

What is the most valuable thing you own?

What was your favorite birthday and why?

What life lesson did you learn the hard way?

What would you do differently if you knew nobody would judge you?

If you could instill one piece of advice in a newborn baby's mind what advice would you give?

What would you not give up for 1 million dollars in cash?

What is your purpose in life?

What is your favorite thing to do in your free time?

What is your favorite childhood memory?

I don't feel like tagging people right now, but if you want to play along just link it back to me or post a comment!

Mint & pink are some of my favs right now-thanks Pinterest :)

March 19, 2012

we like to play games...

This past weekend we stayed in a lot and the hubs and I were reacquainted with our long lost love for playing games. We did a little Jenga and Balderdash. I know Jenga's an "oldie but a goodie", but it was actually my first time to play. Even though Mr. Baker won I enjoyed it. He's a little better at understanding physics so basically he's a nerd. ;)

Baby Boy, I love...

Your big blue eyes...

Your gummy smile...

Your screechy laughs...

Your cute button nose...

The way you curl and flex your toes while you're eating...

Your furrowed brow...

Your coos...

Your soft skin...

Seeing your face first thing in the morning...

Your little sneeze...

Your chubby cheeks...

Your half innie/half outie belly button...

Holding you til my arm goes numb...

Your baby smell...

Your full belly...

When you place your hands on mine while I hold your paci in, as if you want to keep my hand there forever...

Your sleepy grins...

Our naps...

Your gripper toes...

When you get so excited like you're about to burst and all you can do is smile, screech, kick and flap your arms...

Your birthmark...

Your lashes...

Your yawns...

How you melt in my arms when you're sleepy...

That you want and need me...

Baby boy you are perfect in every way.
I can't wait to hear you say that you love me, but I already know that you do.

2 months

So this post is a tad late seeing as you will be 3 months in nine days. You know me though, always late.

Here are some fun things about you at the moment:

When you were first born most people said you looked like your daddy. Now it's about half and half. Some say you look like your daddy when your eyes are closed, but like me when they are open. Don't tell daddy, but I kinda like that. :)

You started to really recognize us and play with us more this past month. It's so fun to watch you get so excited when your dad gets home from work. You guys just talk and talk. You know, the important stuff- sports, politics, etc. ;)

Your neck is getting stronger and stronger and your little legs are too. I can tell that you wish you could be doing more than your body will allow you right now, but don't worry you will be rolling over before we know it!

One of your favorite things is cooing. At church this past Sunday you started talking up a storm during Pastor Ronnie's prayer! It was too cute! You also love looking at yourself in the mirror-I know you're gorgeous, but stay humble little man!

Your favorite thing to do with daddy is laugh-he does make some silly faces bubba I agree. Our favorite thing is cuddling-you love our naps together. :)

At your 2 month visit you weighed 10 pounds 9 ounces and were 23 inches tall! You were 44% in height and 10% in weight. My little beanpole! Looks like daddy genes are in the works!

You were so brave when you got your shots. One proud mommy and one proud daddy right here.

We love you more and more each day baby boy.

Evaluate

It's good to take a step back
to evaluate your life from time to time
Look at where your heading
Imagine where you want to be
Make sure you are on the right path
Prioritize
For me it's all about my purpose
My purpose in life is to glorify God
No, I'm not perfect, but this is my strive
This is a day to day, moment to moment, take action kind of thing
My relationship with God is not a sit back and enjoy type of thing, no
There's more to it than that
You see it's not all about us
There's more at stake
There's an eternity ahead
And that's what I look to when it comes to the day to day
I hope I make a difference for eternity
I hope I matter for Your glory
I'm evaluating my life.

What's your purpose in life?
Are you living it?
What steps do you need to take to get there?
I hope you all take some time to evaluate your lives.
You won't regret it.
Promise. :)

I've Become One of Them

I've always been awkward when it comes to babies.
I never volunteered to hold them and when someone forced me to I would slightly freak out in my mind. Growing up I always wondered what it was in moms and grandmas that made them jump at any chance to get a baby in their arms.
Now, I get it.
Now I understand.

Meet Mr. Baker

My best friend. My leader. My love. My optimist. My complement. My joy. My comfort.

He's bold and outspoken, charming and passionate, clever and witty, serving and kind. He's hard-working, an idealist, loud and boisterous, a little stubborn and strong-willed. He's spontaneous and ambitious, humorous and warm, a bit impatient, but forgiving, encouraging and firm. He is joyful and faithful. He is loving. He is good.

IMG_1384

He dances with me in the kitchen and plays my silly games. He says I'm beautiful and opens doors for me. He puts dishes away in hard-to-reach places and picks up the laundry I drop along the way. He makes funny faces with me and watches all my stupid shows. He thinks I'm pretty in my pj's and always kisses us good-bye. He prays with me and for me. He laughs with me and holds me. He gets me.

He is most everything I am not and everything I need him to be.

The Impossible

Tonight I had a thought.
And then I thought there's no way.
I  felt convicted of thinking You're too small.
-God, you are no small god.
Lord, You are more than big enough.
much. much. more.
You make the impossible happen.
"In Your strength I can crush an army; with my God I can scale any wall."
"Who is the King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle!"
"If God is for us, who can be against us?"
Forgive me for not trusting in Your power.
Lord, there is none greater.
Only You can do this.
Only You can change the world, only You.
And I'm glad You're on my side.
Fighting for the truth.
I will fight for Your truth all the days of my life.
I'm trusting in You for the impossible.

One Fine Day

Today I'm flashing back to one of my favorite days ever.
The birth of my favorite little man.

Healthy baby boy. 7lbs 1 oz, 19 1/4 in long.

374724_10100490304333077_9633854_50670427_1355253213_n

I still have a difficult time remembering those numbers because the first time I heard them I was in a dream. It all happened so fast. Suddenly the life that was growing inside of me that I had been praying for was on my chest. That moment and the first few days that followed are indescribable. The feelings of love were overwhelming. Breathtaking. Something only God could create. I remember sobbing as I held you for the first time. There I was a new mom with a beautiful new life.

DSC_0222

You did need a little coaxing to help bring you into this world-maybe you're a little shy or maybe you're not a fan of change (like your mom).
Thursday, December 22nd 12 a.m. we arrived at the hospital. We checked in and then rode the elevator to the second floor. A nurse showed us to our room and after barely getting settled and changing into my gown they started my IV, drew some blood, and placed Cytotec to help get the induction process going. We tried to get some sleep that night, but with the anxiety and all the in-and-outs from the
nurses, sleep was far from us.

DSC_0166

At 8 a.m. they started me on Pitocin and my doctor came in to break my water. This was very uncomfortable and she wasn't able to break it the first time.
At 9 a.m. my doctor came back for another try. She was successful this time.

DSC_0172

By 10:30-11 a.m. I was dilated to about a 4. I was shaking, curled up on one side of the bed clinging to the bedrail and this was when I decided that I wanted the epidural. The epidural was, by every meaning of the word, a lifesaver. However, getting it was not so pleasant.

DSC_0174

At about 12 p.m. we were told by the nurses to take a nap because they weren't expecting any more progress until about 3-4 p.m. They made a joke and said I could prove them wrong though. So we told our parents to go have lunch and we tried to take a nap. We laid there talking for a while and then I started feeling some pains. Mr. Baker went to get a nurse for me and when she checked I was dilated to a 10. In one hour I went from being dilated 4 or 5 to a 10. The nurses started scrambling and kept telling me not to push. Nothing was set up and no one was ready for this baby to come!
At 1 p.m. it was time to push. I was in this zone, almost like I was outside of my body. I could hear all the voices telling me to push. I closed my eyes. I was determined.
At 1:35 p.m. on December 22nd, my son was born. A moment in time that was perfectly and wonderfully made. A moment of no words. A place forever frozen in my mind.
Beautiful. Precious. Life.
